On Thursday, July 30, at 7:00 PM, 2/3 Gallery hosts the opening of the exhibition Living Spaces I, curated by Călina Coman, bringing together photographic and video works by Andrei Mateescu, Bill Ellis, Bogdan Gîrbovan, Claudia Retegan, Cristina Garabețanu, Irina Rozovsky, Justine Kurland, Katrin Streicher, Sebastian Stumpf, and Verónica Puche.

“For centuries, space was understood as a neutral entity, a geometric framework within which things unfold; however, such a definition is now insufficient and unsatisfactory, particularly because we tend to seek out particularities.

Since Henri Lefebvre, we have come to understand and think of space as a reality produced and transformed by the relationships and interactions between the bodies, objects, and phenomena that pass through it. As ordinary as it is compelling, the concept of inhabited space travels across time and, especially in photography, captures and preserves geographical and cultural contexts through historical, social, affective, ideological, and other lenses.

Each work in the current exhibition was selected from a series developed around distinct concerns and objectives, specific to each artist’s practice and interests at the time of its making—either emblematic series from the early 2000s or images spanning the decades that followed. Documentary photography grounded in personal premises (Andrei Mateescu, Bogdan Gîrbovan, Katrin Streicher), the photographic travel essay and territorial passage (Bill Ellis, Irina Rozovsky), imagined and constructed photography (Claudia Retegan, Justine Kurland), the performative dimension (Sebastian Stumpf), as well as autobiographical insertion and work with the archive (Cristina Garabețanu, Verónica Puche), converge in a shared discourse on photographic space, articulated through the language of architectural elements, landscape, proximity, intimacy, presence, distance, materialities, surfaces, body, and bodies.” (excerpt from the curatorial text)

Conceived as the first part of a two-stage exhibition project, the exhibition offers a perspective on the body and space as lived experience, fundamentally inscribed in the human condition. The project will continue with Living Spaces II, opening on September 10, 2026, at the Constanța Art Museum.

The exhibition can be visited from July 30 to August 27 at 4 Franceză Street, Bucharest.
