Opening | “Index of Absence”. Exhibition by NOIMA Group at META Spațiu

The opening of the exhibition Index of Absence, created by NOIMA group—comprising Ciprian Bodea, Dan Gherman, Cosmin Frunteș, Andrei Rosetti, and Sorin Scurtulescu—will take place on Thursday, June 4, at 6:30 PM, at META Spațiu Gallery in Timișoara.

The exhibition is rooted in the semiotic notion of the “index” — a sign that retains traces of a gesture, a presence, or a past contact. Within this framework, Index of Absence explores how memory, absence, and the traces left by experience can be translated visually through painting, drawing, and object-based works.

Having developed in close proximity to the painter Constantin Flondor and influenced by the legacy of the Sigma Group, the five artists have cultivated, over more than two decades, a collective practice grounded in dialogue and experimentation. The works brought together in the exhibition combine painting, installation, performance, and artistic intervention in a reflection on signs, memory, and presence.

Index of Absence presents a series of works that preserve the traces of processes, gestures, and actions that have already taken place. Surfaces, geometric forms, and visual structures become spaces for investigation and contemplation, inviting viewers to consider the relationship between presence and absence.

Through this project, the NOIMA group continues its artistic exploration of painting as experience and presence, while reaffirming its commitment to artistic collaboration based on shared affinities and collective research.
