Painting exhibition by Ștefan SEVASTRE at Galeria Romană

Galeria Romană recently opened the painting exhibition dedicated to the artist Ștefan Sevastre (1926 – 2017). At the opening spoke Ms. Doina Mândru, historian and art critic, and Mr. Mihai Sârbulescu, painter and member of the Prolog Group.

“The Romanian Gallery does justice to a historical record by adding the painter and teacher Ștefan Sevastre (2.11.1926 – 23.12.2017) to its portfolio of contemporary artists. Thus, a founding nucleus for the image of contemporary Romanian art, the sequence 1965-1990 (…) is completed.

Working and observing nature with the teacher, he understood without much theory the origin and role of grays in painting. Through his teachers, he reaches L’Illustration – with its wide artistic information – and Andreescu. As a student (1945-1951) at the Institute of Fine Arts N. Grigorescu, he studied drawing with N. Dărăscu (1883-1959) and painting with J. Al. Steriadi (1880-1956).

His first teachers, impressionist painters, had completed their studies in Paris before the first war at the Julian Academy, in the studio of J. P. Laurens, whose practice had remained academic. From there, their method is anchored only in the study by nature, model, and composition. In his final years, Sevastre also studied with M.H. Maxy (1895-1971), an avant-garde left-wing painter[…].

In our recent history, the figure of Ștefan Sevastre remains that of a talented painter and teacher who valued his students with the same exigency he had for himself, who continued to study together with his students, becoming from a melancholic post-impressionist with the aspiration of synthesis plastic an authentic abstract of a rare ideational and stylistic clarity.” Doina Mândru, 2024

“In painting, harmony defines the tendency towards the balance of chromatic forces. Stefan Sevastre is looking for geometric, constructive interpretations of harmony. From this point of view, his painting is today at the most evolved point of its trajectory. It elevates the solar energies of the primary colors, red, yellow and blue, on a very sensitive scale, in quantities and qualities dosed by the law of moderation: blue more, red less, yellow and less.” Mihai Sârbulescu, 2024

The works are part of the Sevastre family collection, and the copyright belongs to Miron Doru Sevastre.

The exhibition is also accompanied by a catalog of the artist’s works. Texts are written by Doina Mândru, Mihai Sârbulescu, Andrei Rosetti.

The exhibition can be visited between November 1 and 30, 2024. Admission is free.
