“Here, now you don’t exist,” the first solo exhibition of artist Laurian Popa at Jecza Gallery, presents his new series of paintings and drawings that explore the theme of spatial complexity, both in the bi-dimensional context of painting and in relation to the viewer. Under the guidance of curator Horațiu Lipot, this exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how perception and iconographic conventions shape the artistic experience.
“The new series of paintings and drawings by Laurian Popa centers on the subject of spatiality. Both that which is specific to the illusory, bidimensional medium of painting, and the expanded space created through its relationship with the gaze and the observer. A theme about the language of painting, treated with the elements of painting. About the deliberate system of signs and indices that forms the artistic authorship domain, even for that which we tend to see as belonging to a strong individuality and materiality, such as that of painting; about how we see, or how we are taught to see, when our gaze is guided through conventional iconographies; about morphogeneses of all kinds, which also imply the constitutive nature of physical, real objects, not just their representation; about time and how it appears in a medium that is, by its nature, static.” – excerpt from the curatorial text written by Horațiu Lipot
Laurian Popa was born in 1980 in Arad, where he lives and works. He is a visual artist, a graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Design in Timișoara, specializing in Painting, under the guidance of Professor Constantin Flondor.
The exhibition can be visited until December 1, 2024.
