“Man without Memory”, the duo show Teodor ZAICA & Mircea HRISTESCU from Galeria Romană, reflects the artists’ shared concern for a historical phenomenon scarcely explored in recent Romanian art history: the ideological program of creating the man without memory.
The two artists aim to revive the memory of the victims of communist repression through powerful works, ranging from portraits charged with an iconic spirit to large-scale compositions depicting scenes of abusive punitive measures. The exhibition invites visitors to meditate, with works infused with a discreet spirituality.
Teodor Zaica is a graduate of the National University of Arts in Bucharest, specializing in painting. He exhibits works from the series “Communist Prisons” and “Creating the Man Without Memory.” Working with archives of images and film references, he transfers and processes images to dematerialization. His atmospheric works, where the eternal poles of Good and Evil clash, reflect the inner turmoil of humanity.
Mircea Hristescu is a graduate of the National University of Arts in Bucharest, specializing in photo-video. A multimedia artist, he has a preference for painting as a medium in his recent work. Although he has reoriented himself towards traditional painting, he finds inspiration in photographic images. References to modern and contemporary Romanian painting (Horia Bernea, Ion Grigorescu) abound, with deliberate chromatic economy and realistic simplicity. He is interested in capturing the image that tends towards the sacralization of the oppressed.
The exhibition can be visited until February 29. Gallery hours: Monday – Friday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Saturday: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Free entrance.
