International female artist Pixy Liao exhibits for the first time in Romania at 2/3 gallery

2/3 gallery opens on March 8, at 6 p.m, the exhibition “The woman who clicks the shutter”, one of the most appreciated projects at the international level created by the famous multidisciplinary artist Pixy Liao who exhibits for the first time in Romania. The opening event will take place in the presence of the artist.

Pixy Liao explores a range of relational possibilities and proposes a reversal of the heteronormative scenario in which traditional couple roles become interchangeable

Born and raised in Shanghai, China, Pixy Liao received her MFA in photography from the University of Memphis in 2008. In this completely new and foreign environment, she began working as an artist, exploring everyday life in Memphis through -a series of “American Landscapes”.
It was also in Memphis that she met her lover-turned-muse, Moro, inspiring the work for which she became best known, Experimental Relationship. The ongoing project is a staged documentation of their relationship spanning over 12 years, in which Liao creates various intimate, playful, and witty tableaus that often place her in a position of power over Moro, in a subtle reversal of gender roles.

The exhibition “The woman who clicks the shutter” features the latest iteration of the series “experimental relationship” with most of the photographs being taken after 2018, while the couple was traveling through their native countries of China and Japan.

“The various poses and fragments of the imaginary of the couple’s relationship include depictions of tenderness and intimacy in the solitude of nature, the ingenuity of childhood games in which the two simultaneously share the same rob, or Pixy assuming the role of power by carrying Moro over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. The artist presents us with a game between two lovers, whilst exploiting the viewer’s voyeurism and curiosity through seemingly childish actions and poses. The deliberate inversion of roles of power and the directness in which the artist confronts the viewer’s gaze leaves no doubt as to who is in control. The answer is simple: PIXY!”, declared Claudia Retegan, the curator of the exhibition.
