Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery presents Dan Basu’s “INK” exhibition. Curated by Ioana Marinescu, “INK” marks the artist’s first solo exhibition, featuring works created between 2018 and 2024.
“The minimalist title refers to ink, the substance through which mental images are fixed on paper. The exhibition speaks about seriality and sequentiality. Each piece is a cell of an organism, tightly linked to the others, forming a coherent and dynamic whole. Importance is not only given to the individual work but also to its position in the series, relative to the other works in the series. The creative process is, in turn, a central element for Dan Basu. The choice of support, tools, and techniques in which he works are just the first steps of a complex and intense ritual. Dan Basu (b. 1983) lives and works in Bucharest. His artistic practice includes installations, photography, drawing, and porcelain. The artist covers a variety of surfaces with textures that seem to flow seamlessly between symbols, asemic writing, and empty forms. Through their structures and abstract imagery, he expresses ineffable thoughts and ideas, creating harmonious order and chromatic contrasts.
Ioana Marinescu (b. 1988) is a curator and art historian who intensely studies the biographies of artist couples. Within her professional interests lies the study of map imagery in contemporary art. She is an author and editor for volumes such as “Mapping: Narratives/Time/Space” or “MSGTL,” published by Vellant Publishing, which present the creations of contemporary artists from Bucharest.
The INK exhibition can be visited at the Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery space located at Jean-Louis Calderon nr. 34, until May 8th, from Thursday to Saturday, between 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM, and Sunday, between 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
