The project “Imagined Dialogues with Brâncuși: Expanding the Limits of Artistic Expression” continues at GLORIÆ Art Gallery in Craiova with two public events: a creative workshop and guided tour on September 8, followed by a roundtable discussion and exhibition finissage on September 15.

Initiated by the Empower Art & Artists Association, in partnership with the SerArte Foundation and GLORIÆ Art Gallery, and funded by the Ministry of Culture, the project brings contemporary sculpture into the public spotlight through a group exhibition featuring works by six young and emerging women artists: Alexandra Brînzac, Lorena Cocioni, Miruna-Ioana Copăcel, Andreea Grigoraș, Ana Ionescu, and Ana Pascu. The exhibition proposes a dialogue between Brâncuși’s legacy and contemporary forms of artistic expression.

Curated by Gloria Berceanu and Valentin Boiangiu, the exhibition occupies both the gallery’s interior space and its garden, placing the works in dialogue with the architecture and surrounding environment.

For the participating artists, encountering Brâncuși’s work also meant gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and human context in which he developed his artistic language.

Artist Miruna-Ioana Copăcel emphasizes the importance of the people who supported the creation of the Târgu Jiu Monumental Ensemble, particularly the role of Arethia Tătărescu and the National League of Gorj Women: “I enjoyed seeing this side of Brâncuși as well—the person who was surrounded and encouraged by other people who recognized the importance of sculpture and made it happen.”

For Alexandra Brînzac, the research visits offered a different perspective on the artist’s work: “What impressed me most was the connection between the work and the context in which it was created. By visiting Craiova and Târgu Jiu, I began to notice elements in the local architecture and in the simplicity of its forms that I also recognize in Brâncuși’s sculptural language. The experience changed my perspective on his work, allowing me to see it also through the lens of the cultural and visual context from which it emerged.”

September 8: Creation, Exploration, and Dialogue

The first event scheduled as part of this final stage of the project is dedicated especially to students and young people. On September 8, at GLORIÆ Art Gallery, Valentin Boiangiu and Laura Semenov will lead a creative workshop inspired by Brâncuși’s artistic universe and by the works of the six artists featured in the exhibition.

The program will begin with a guided tour of the exhibition, designed to provide participants with reference points for understanding the artworks and the curatorial perspectives behind them. The tour will explore the relationships between sculpture, installation, object, and space, as well as the ways in which the artists develop their own responses to the challenge of an imaginary dialogue with Brâncuși.

September 15: Sculpture Beyond the Limits of the Exhibition

The project will conclude on September 15 with a roundtable discussion and the exhibition finissage.

Moderated by Valentin Boiangiu, the exhibition’s co-curator, the roundtable will bring together perspectives on contemporary sculpture and on the experiences of the six participating artists, opening up a conversation about materiality, freedom of expression, the relationship between body and object, the dialogue between tradition and experimentation, and the place of sculpture within contemporary art.
