There is a form of withdrawal in Roman Cotoșman’s practice that gradually becomes an artistic language. One of the most discreet yet radical presences of the Timișoara neo-avant-garde, the artist was associated with Group 111 and later with the Sigma context. As early as the 1960s, Cotoșman developed a visual language oriented toward geometric abstraction, spatiality, and the dematerialization of the image.

“Following his emigration to the United States, his practice moved toward an increasingly austere and introspective direction, transforming the two-dimensional surface into a space of mental tension and ascetic contemplation.

The exhibition follows this singular trajectory, bringing together works from the MNAC collection in which minimal, almost monochromatic forms absorb the gaze into a universe of silence and inner rhythm. Between constructivist rigor and meditative sensibility, Roman Cotoșman’s work proposes an intensely concentrated visual experience, in which geometry becomes a spiritual instrument, while the fragility of the material acquires the force of an inner monument.” — Călin Dan

Curated by Irina Radu, the exhibition “110 Solitudes” offers an encounter with a body of work built around minimal forms and a deeply introspective sensibility. The exhibition follows this particular direction in Roman Cotoșman’s practice, bringing together works in which the tension between geometry, spatiality, and the dematerialization of the image becomes the core of the visual experience.
