From 23 May to 18 October 2026, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest presents the exhibition CRISTIAN DIȚOIU. ILLUMINATIONS, curated by Călin Dan, with production coordination by Alexandru Oberländer-Târnoveanu.

The exhibition focuses on Cristian Dițoiu’s painterly practice, centered on an exploration of seriality, repetition, and the autonomy of the image. Although eclairage traditionally refers to a scenographic device associated with a dramatic vision of reality, in the artist’s painting this procedure is detached from any theatrical or narrative intention. Through accumulation and variation, the works construct a self-referential universe in which repetition becomes a method of investigating the limits of painting itself. The resulting monumental ensembles oscillate between a celebration of and a departure from the pictorial medium, creating a paradoxical relationship between attachment to painting and the desire to transcend its conventions.
