Opening | “What Is Not Seen?”. Solo Exhibition by Denis Nanciu at Elite Art Gallery

On Thursday, May 7, 2026, starting at 18:30, Elite Art Gallery will host the opening of the exhibition “What Is Not Seen?”, curated by Carla Schoppel.

“‘What Is Not Seen?’, signed by Denis Nanciu, proposes a visual investigation into emotional fragility and the structures that shape interpersonal relationships. The works, created using various techniques, build a coherent journey around an essential question: what remains unspoken, unexpressed, and misunderstood in emotional experience?

Denis Nanciu develops his artistic practice at the intersection of introspection and visual formalization. In this context, the works become forms of self-analysis in which the body appears fragmented, symbolized, protected. A recurring motif—thorns—shapes the central metaphor of the exhibition: the absence of touch. Thorns are both a sign of rejection or distance and a mechanism of protection, a necessary boundary in the face of the risk of being hurt.

The exhibition functions as an exercise in attention and the slowing down of perception. Denis Nanciu’s works require a willingness to remain in tension, in ambiguity. He constructs a space in which these works are seen and felt; thus, the distance between object and viewer itself becomes a territory of negotiation. ‘What Is Not Seen?’ is, ultimately, about what escapes representation but continues to act deeply within our relationships.” (Carla Schoppel, curator)

“The moment when touch disappears becomes a symbolic threshold: emotion transforms, and what was fluid becomes tense. Feelings take shape, and around them, metaphorical thorns begin to grow. The curatorial approach seeks to highlight this fragility of relational balance. How can feelings be articulated? What words can become thorns? ‘What Is Not Seen?’ opens a space of inquiry in which the viewer is invited to negotiate their own emotional boundaries. Beyond the visual forms, a reflection emerges on attention as a relational practice—an attention directed simultaneously toward oneself and toward the other, in a constantly unstable balance.” (curatorial text)

The exhibition can be visited between May 5–29, 2026, Monday to Friday, at Elite Art Gallery (3–5 United Nations Square), between 11:00 and 19:00.
