On Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 6:00 PM, the opening of the exhibition “Utopian Body – Toward a Silent Presence” by artist Claudiu Ciobanu will take place at Cosmic House Gallery in Cluj-Napoca.
“In Utopian Body – Toward a Silent Presence, Claudiu Ciobanu proposes a subtle yet essential shift: from the body as a mental projection to the body as a space of silence. If, in the previous stage, the mind functioned as a generator of identities and perceptions, in this series the artist investigates what remains when discourse is suspended: a body that no longer asserts, claims, or explains itself, but exists in a state of reflection and awareness.
In a context oversaturated with images, positions, and declarations of identity, silence becomes a radical form of presence. Here, the body is a territory in which meaning is constructed through absence, opacity, and the mystery of never being fully decoded. In this direction, Claudiu Ciobanu’s project enters into dialogue with reflections on corporeality as a limit of visibility, where what cannot be said becomes just as relevant as what can be seen.
If, in Utopian Body, the head was a symbol of knowledge and of the potential to generate multiple realities, in Toward a Silent Presence the body is reconfigured as a space of interiorization. The figures proposed by the artist seem suspended between appearance and disappearance, between the visible and the invisible, suggesting a corporeality no longer oriented outward but toward an inner core inaccessible to the viewer, within the mind of the character—the head. This withdrawal is active, almost protective, where silence becomes a mechanism for preserving the self.
Transparency becomes a filter, a layer that separates and protects, creating a distance between the body and the gaze. The characters are entities that refuse total access, inviting a slower, more attentive form of contemplation, yet one that is never completely satisfying. The color palette, in turn, becomes distilled. The emotional intensity of color does not disappear but is absorbed into a restrained atmosphere where tensions remain latent. Colors function as subtle affective resonances, as echoes of inner states that resist articulation through language.
In this sense, Utopian Body – Toward a Silent Presence can be understood as a reflection on the limits of representing the body in an era dominated by excessive visibility. Claudiu Ciobanu’s silent body no longer participates in the economy of spectacle but withdraws from it, refusing to be fully available. It becomes a space of resistance, where identity is no longer exposed but protected through ambiguity. Instead of a mirror, the exhibition proposes an opaque screen that reflects only partially and always preserves an inaccessible remainder. This impossibility of total transparency paradoxically becomes a space of authenticity.
Thus, if Utopian Body proposed a zero point of identity reconstruction, Toward a Silent Presence explores the condition that follows that point: a space in which the body no longer needs to define itself, but simply to exist. In its silence, it is not empty but full of suspended potential meanings that do not ask to be spoken, only perceived.”
