Tutti Frutti: A manifesto exhibition about pre- and post-December Romanian cultural dynamics at the Elite Art Gallery

Elite Art Gallery hosts the exhibition Tutti Frutti by the artist Bogdan Sassu. The exhibition, curated by Roxana Diochețanu, can be visited until November 29, 2024.

In an allegorical mania, the Tutti Frutti exhibition is not a simple collection of works but a manifesto of pre- and post-December Romanian cultural dynamics, a space where symbolic fragments are joined in a mix that embraces both the personal and the collective. Always changing, the Romanian artistic identity has accumulated layers of history, memory, and imagination, a cultural “tutti frutti” that combines the past with the present and tradition with innovation.

“Inspired by the doctoral research of the artist Bogdan Sassu, the exhibition investigates the complexity of Romanian symbols in a continuous search for the magnum opus, each work passing through an alchemical process of symbolic maturation, purification and return to itself. In this way, the alchemical stages define the artistic process, which is transformed and felt in a context of approach and reinterpretation. From variegated fruits to recognizable figures, the artist dresses the exhibition in a map of symbols recovered from established artists such as Mircea Cantor, Adrian Ghenie or Alexandru Rădvan, the past becoming a raw material for new meanings. The dilemmas of who we were, who we are and who we can become make up a synaesthetic game, which viewers are encouraged to play, rediscovering the beauty, irony and challenge of cultural identity in continuous transformation”, said Roxana Diochețanu, curator of Elite Art Gallery.

The Tutti Frutti exhibition reflects a contemporary experimental language, the exhibited works being anchored in Romania’s transition period in the 90s when the crossroads between postmodernism and postcommunism opened up new perspectives and challenges for artists.

Bogdan Sassu (b. 1990) graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree at UNArte Bucharest, Painting department, completing his first master’s degree in 2014, also at UNArte. The second MA, undertaken between 2015-2016, focused on research through the arts at Lancaster University. In 2023, he completed his doctoral research in Arts and Media at the University of Plymouth in the UK. The artist’s works benefit from strong symbols and visual elements that create an artistic universe where the past and the present intertwine and dialogue.

The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Friday at the Elite Art Gallery (Piața Naționile Unite, no. 3-5) between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
