Transilvania | Extravaganza: 130 Works and Over Five Decades of Creation in the Most Extensive Exhibition Dedicated to Ștefan Câlția

On June 19, Transilvania | Extravaganza, the most extensive exhibition dedicated to Ștefan Câlția, opened. Hosted in the spaces of the former Pedagogical School of the Ursuline Monastery in Sibiu, the exhibition marks one of the most significant projects devoted to the artist.

Bringing together 130 works created between 1970 and 2026, 105 of which are presented to the public for the first time, the exhibition offers the most comprehensive insight to date into the world that Ștefan Câlția has been observing and safeguarding for over five decades. Curated by Liviana Dan, the exhibition spans approximately 1,000 square meters and traces the main themes of the artist’s work: village and nature, journey and flight, theater, and the relationship between humans and landscape, between reality and imagination.

The exhibition includes 130 works of painting, drawing, engraving, and artist’s books, drawn both from the artist’s collection and private collections. The oldest exhibited work—Carpenter—dates from the first half of the 1970s, while the most recent—Glass with Herbs—was created in April 2026.

In parallel with the main exhibition, the Brukenthal National Museum hosts a capsule exhibition also curated by Liviana Dan, which brings together works by Ștefan Câlția focused on vegetal and animal themes in dialogue with pieces from the museum’s heritage collection. The capsule exhibition can be visited with a ticket to the Brukenthal National Museum.

The exhibition experience is completed by a series of interventions developed in collaboration with project partners. Cărturești is present with a pop-up inspired by Ștefan Câlția’s universe, bringing together art albums, publications, and objects inspired by the exhibition’s themes. Designer Ami Amalia has created a series of objects especially for Transilvania | Extravaganza, available in a pop-up store, while NOD brings a temporary café into the exhibition space, conceived as a place for meeting and pause for visitors.

“The work of Ștefan Câlția has the rare ability to make us slow down and see the world around us differently. Transilvania | Extravaganza is more than an exhibition; it is an invitation to imagination, reflection, and dialogue. We are pleased to be part of a project that brings together people, ideas, and emotions and that offers the public the chance to discover one of the most valuable voices of Romanian contemporary art,” said Greta Redeleanu, Marketing Director at REGINA MARIA.

“CEC Bank supports cultural projects that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Romanian artistic heritage and that create relevant contexts for dialogue between the public and major cultural values. Transilvania | Extravaganza is a remarkable endeavor through its scale and through the opportunity it offers to discover Ștefan Câlția’s artistic universe in an exceptional curatorial framework. It is an honor for us to be partners in this project and to contribute to bringing culture closer to as many people as possible,” stated Cătălina Roman, Director of the Identity and Strategic Communication Department at CEC Bank.

Transilvania | Extravaganza can be visited at the Ursuline Monastery (34–36 General Magheru Street, Sibiu) until August 16, 2026.

Online tickets are available on Eventbook and can also be purchased on-site at the exhibition space.
