The Diary of a Contemporary Female Artist. Group Show at Galeria Parter Palat

On Friday, February 9, 2023, at 9:00 AM, the exhibition titled “The Diary of a Contemporary Female Artist” opened at the Galeria Parter Plat of the Cultural Center “„Palatele Brâncoveneşti de la Porţile Bucureştiului” in Mogoșoaia. The exhibition is curated by Anca Maria Ciofîrlă, Mihaela Constantin, and Diana Roman.

The opening will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 3:00 PM.

“The diary is a medium, a tool charged with emotions, which depends entirely on its creator. Everyone knows that journals are the most intimate “objects” people possess, containing all the elements that make up the human experience, without any reservations, as they are intended only for the author’s eyes. However, no journal will ever be identical to another, as each person has their approach and desire to keep a journal to track their experiences from day to day and the development of personal processes.

What happens, however, when artists lay their thoughts into journals? Most often, these become artistic objects, as intimate annotations, narratives, and more or less theoretical thoughts are complemented by artistic details, excellent examples of their art in the form of sketches and studies. In some cases, the journal is indeed a work of art in itself, a unique testimony to the artistic vision of its creator. This is how I would define what the exhibition “The Diary of a Contemporary Female Artist” offers, as the visual journals revealed by the 20 artists provide evidence of unique visions using an elaborate artistic fabric woven from their memories and reflections.

Marked by the recent past of the pandemic, which has limited and concentrated their social, professional, and artistic existence within a single perimeter, the exhibitors reveal what they have to say through stories/symbols/layered iconographies. Each work represents a dive into the personal mythology of memories, sufferings, and reflections – the artists analyzing and interpreting various personal motives, relying on universally valid symbols. The journals of the 20 artists spring from intuitive experiences of the world, their works contemplating individuality explored through self-absence. The power of the fragment, of the dominant colour, or just as an accent seems to evoke the question: “In what way should a woman live – socially, politically, and privately?”. We find the answer in the works exhibited, as the artists forcefully and sensitively exhibit their world in a pressing, yet creatively generative global context.” Diana Român, art critic.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until March 10, 2024, and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
