The Romanian creation YAGORIA, made by PLASTIC Art Performance, was selected at the International Ecoperformance Festival in Brazil.
The YAGORIA ecovideoperformance is among the 26 artistic projects selected for the festival’s third edition, from over 200 works sent by artists from 40 countries. Inspired by traditional ritualistic practices performed in the Balkan space documented during the project – customs with masks, customs of protection, practices of communion with the elements of nature – YAGORIA has an important component of awareness of the loss of bonds with the natural environment in contemporary society and the need to protect it from abusive interventions.
The creators of YAGORIA are Alina Tofan (artistic director, eco-performer), Maria Mora, Răzvan Omotă, Aigul Cheosep (performers), Gabriel Durlan (Cinematography / DOP), Alexandru Claudiu Maxim (video editor), Răzvan Leucea (coloring), Manuela Marchiș / Pilestra (sound-art), GCV & Ecaterina Colasîz (costume design).
The International Festival of Ecoperformance in Brazil is organized and curated by Taanteatro, the company within which ecoperformance was theorized and developed as a performative artistic practice in the 90s. In the vision of the initiators and the international collectives that joined the artistic movement in the last three years, Ecoperformance understands the environment and the body as inseparable dimensions of life and performative creation. The body is itself a medium. Moreover, ecoperformance conceptualizes itself as an environmental process and considers environmental interactions as performative.
The festival will take place online, on the www.ecoperformance.art.br platform, enjoying this edition also the presence of the public at the screenings in Cine Satyros Bijou, São Paulo – Brazil, from June 1-4, 2023.
The jury includes names from the Brazilian and international contemporary art scene: Maura Baiocchi (director, curator, ecoperformer – the first theoretician of ecoperformance), Monica Cristina Bernardes (curator and producer), Jorge Ndlozy (curator), Wolfgang Pannek (production director).
The collective of Romanian artists is not participating in this festival for the first time. In 2021, ASPHYXIA was presented in the first edition.
PLASTIC Art Performance Collective was created by Georgiana Vlahbei (program director, anthropologist, and visual artist) and Alina Tofan (concept director, project manager, and ecoperformer) within the Macaia Association, being the only group active on a national level developing this artistic practice in direct connection with the founders of the artistic movement.
