On Thursday, March 13, starting at 5:00 PM, at the National Museum of Contemporary Art will take place the opening of the study-exhibition dedicated to sculptor Mihai Caranica (1943–2023).
Born in Deva and artistically trained in Romania, Mihai Caranica attended The People’s School of Art in Bucharest under the guidance of Gabriela Manole-Adoc. His studies in Geology provided him with an in-depth understanding of materials and selected rocks, allowing him to grasp their textures and shape them with a remarkable sensitivity. After emigrating to the United States in 1984, Caranica continued to create and exhibit, returning to Romania in 2014 to reintegrate the national artistic scene.
“I have a special relationship with sculpture as a medium. Earlier studies in Geology allowed me to have an intimate knowledge of primary materials, to anticipate their reactions to the various interventions in the process of carving. This approach shapes the very genesis of my subject matter: the stone talks to me through the language of textures and structures, directing me to the idea that would be finalised in the sculpture. Through this subtle dialog I seek a quiet harmony that satisfies both the eye and the soul.” (Mihai Caranica)
Exhibition organised with the support of the artist’s family.
The exhibition will be open to the public until May 11, 2025
