Opening graphic exhibition by Orosz István at Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Bucharest

Two spaces will exhibit the works of Orosz István, a graphic designer, animation film director, and Kossuth Award-winning writer who received the title of Artist of the Nation during Bucharest Graphic Days.

Orosz István’s graphic drawings and anamorphoses will be exhibited at the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Bucharest gallery. The exhibition, curated by Ciprian N. Isac, will include a selection of works on various themes from the artist’s collection and will be opened on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m., in the presence of the artist Orosz István.

Orosz István declares in the context of his graphic works that the colors only hide the essence. “A graphic designer like me gathers and repeats with some satisfaction: colors are just a cover. Black and white is the true essence. I would like to say it in Pingalapese if I knew the language of Micronesia; unfortunately, I don’t know it. The island has 250 inhabitants. They speak Pingelapese and see in black and white. It would be nice to think that they are all graphic artists, that all islanders spend their time making ink drawings, woodcuts, metal engravings, aquatints and lithographs, but I have yet to find any record of this.”

“Orosz István’s works lie at the intersection of art and science, highlighting his interest in mathematics, geometry and architectural structures. An essential aspect of his work is the use of perspective and spatial distortion, often playing with the viewer’s perception. Through techniques such as anamorphism, the artist creates images that reveal new dimensions and meanings when viewed from certain angles or reflected on curved surfaces. This approach turns the act of looking into an interactive process, inviting the audience to actively explore and discover the hidden messages in his compositions. Inspired by the tradition of classical graphics, Orosz often uses historical and cultural themes in his creations, reinterpreting familiar motifs in a contemporary and provocative manner.

His drawings, which range from complex engravings to minimalist posters, demonstrate a remarkable mastery of technique and an exceptional talent for manipulating space and light. Orosz István’s work reflects a continuous dialogue between illusion and reality, between the rational and the fantastic. Through his works, the artist challenges us to look beyond what is apparent, to explore the limits of perception and appreciate the beauty and mystery of the visual universe. Thus, Orosz István stands out as a master of contemporary graphic art, managing to create an innovative visual language, full of subtlety and depth, which continues to inspire and fascinate the public at a global level”, mentions Ciprian N. Isac, curator of the exhibition.

The exhibition can be visited until November 8.

The Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Bucharest is also a strategic partner at the 3rd edition of the Bucharest Graphic Days festival. Bucharest Graphic Days is a multiple event dedicated to graphic design in its various representations, as well as related fields. The educational component and the involvement of important artists from the country and abroad define the purpose of the festival – to raise the existing visual aesthetic level, to increase the degree of interaction between graphic members of the guild and to emphasize to the general public the usefulness, importance and beauty of the graphic phenomenon.
