MALMAISON OPEN DOORS III

The Malmaison Workshops/ Atelierele Malmaison are reopening to the general public for two consecutive days (November 26-27).

The Malmaison Workshops occupy about 3000 sqm of the Malmaison building. Initially a military barrack, the Malmaison Building has a significant historical importance and a 177 years old , during which time there functioned, in turn, a Military School of Officers, a military tribunal, a prison during Antonescu’s regime, and a center of investigation and detention of the Securitate during the early period of the communist regime. The Malmaison workshops aim to integrate the building into the living circuit of the city, inaugurating a new stage in its long history.

Through the efforts of the artistic community and with the support of the main sponsor UniCredit Bank, together with the sponsors Brico Depot, Policolor, Ursa, and The Plot, the 1st floor was renovated, and then also the 2nd floor, now occupied by 35 workshops of artists, along with 9 project spaces coordinated by artistic groups, non-profit associations or art galleries.

The Malmaison Workshops project has taken shape organically, and independently, through the self-organization of a multidisciplinary group active in different environments on the contemporary art scene in Bucharest.

The space aims to contribute to the shaping of a stable and sustainable cultural context in the long term through solidarity, encouraging collaborations between artists, and other cultural agents at the national and international level, and supporting new generations, who need a support structure.

The community formed around the Workshops believes that art and artists must have a safe and visible place in society, and their creation requires long-term support through the existence of exhibition and work spaces accessible in terms of price and location. Individual workshops are open to the general public for visits twice a year. The public is invited to consult the schedule for visiting the galleries and other exhibition spaces.
