MALMAISON OPEN DOORS 8: 26 artists, 6 solo exhibitions, one group exhibition

The 8th edition of Malmaison Open Doors took place on 26 and 27 October 2024. Twenty-six artists opened their studios, together with seven galleries and project spaces, within the Malmaison building, located on Calea Plevnei no. 137C, building B, floors 1 and 2, District 6, Bucharest.

Malmaison’s independent art community organizes this art weekend every six months, giving visitors the opportunity to explore artists’ workshops as well as new gallery exhibitions and artist-run spaces. Unlike most cultural events, where the final product is presented to the public, Open Doors offers a unique opportunity to observe the artistic process in progress—sketches, models, experiments—and to have a direct dialogue with the creators.
Entry is free for the entire duration of the event. The public will have the opportunity to explore a varied program that includes workshop tours, exhibitions, and conversations with artists, gallerists, cultural managers, and event organizers.

ABOUT MALMAISON WORKSHOPS
Originally a military barracks, the Malmaison Building is 181 years old and has significant historical importance. During that time, it served as a Military Officer’s school, a military court, a prison during the Antonescu regime, and a center of investigation and detention of the Security during the beginning of the communist regime. The workshops occupy approximately 3000 sqm of the Malmaison building and aim to integrate the building into the lively circuit of the city, inaugurating a new stage in its long history.

Atelierele Malmaison project took shape organically, independently, through the self-organization of a multidisciplinary group active in different environments on the contemporary art scene in Bucharest. Although the need for initiatives of this type is not at all new, rarely in the history of the Bucharest art scene has such an extensive group succeeded in this type of coagulation.

The space aims to shape a stable and sustainable cultural context in the long term through solidarity, encouraging collaborations between artists, artists and other cultural agents on a national and international level and supporting new generations who need a stable support structure.

The community formed around the Atelierele Malmaison believes that art and artists must have a safe and visible place in society, and their creation requires long-term support through the existence of exhibition and work spaces that are affordable in terms of price and location. The individual workshops are open to the general public for visits twice a year; otherwise, they are dedicated to work. The public is invited to consult their schedule to visit the galleries and other exhibition spaces.
