Ion Theodorescu-Sion in an Art Safari exhibition across the Prut

Art Safari announces a new event in the Republic of Moldova dedicated to the famous Romanian painter Ion Theodorescu-Sion (1882-1939) at the National Art Museum of Moldova. The exhibition, financed by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova (DRRM) within the Government of Romania, is open to the public, with free access, from July 12 to September 15, 2024.

The presentation in Chisinau brings monumental compositions with a neo-Romanian theme, grandiose portraits of peasants, and representations of women portrayed as goddesses of the forest into the foreground. It also includes a diversity of still lifes rich in details.

“DRRM’s involvement in the exhibition of Romanian fine art in Chisinau is one of the goals that I am honored to have fulfilled. The collaboration with Art Safari, an international benchmark in this field, made this goal realized at a high level. The exhibition of the works of the great painter Ion Theodorescu-Sion is an example of this, and I urge you all to visit it”, declares Adrian Dupu, state secretary of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova.

One of the great masters of Romanian art, Sion had a strong connection with Bessarabia, being known as the savior of the School of Fine Arts in Chisinau. More than a simple presentation of Sion’s artistic creation, the exhibition is an invitation to explore Romanian reality from the perspective of one of the outstanding masters of Romanian art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ion Theodorescu-Sion, born in Ianca, Brăila county, stands out for approaching artistic themes and techniques in an innovative way, connecting them with the Romanian reality of his time. With a complex career, Ion Theodorescu-Sion studied both in Romania and in Paris, experiencing a diversity of artistic styles, from Impressionism to Cubism.

Sion also played an important role in shaping the national identity and promoting Romanian values, transposing in art not only the beauty but also the defining features of Romanian culture and history. Through his monumental compositions and portraits of peasants and women, the artist also captured the aspirations and ideals that marked his era. Art Safari dedicated an exhibition to the artist in 2023 in Bucharest.

The project is financed by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova (DRRM).
