The exhibition “Holomer” at Scemtovici & Benowitz Gallery, curated by Gilda Ghinoiu, brings together seven Romanian artists presenting works in painting, mixed-media drawing, metal pieces, and film projection: Radu Băieș, Laura Covaci, Ioan De Moisa, Misha Diaconu, Oana Fărcaș, Robert Fekete, and Andreea Medar.
“The concept of this group exhibition was inspired by a term artificially created by the philosopher Constantin Noica, by combining two Greek words: hólos (whole) and méros (part). The holomer is the element that reflects the part in the whole and the whole in the part. It is that abstract structure that contains all the information necessary for a form to become stable and encapsulates the full evolutionary potential of the mature form. It is the element that simultaneously expresses both the whole and the part.
Through an exercise of useful fiction, adapted to contemporary language, we can extrapolate Noica’s holomer and say that it allows the procedural generation of the whole from a single part, functioning almost like an ontological DNA. In his writings, Noica uses this term to describe a special type of reality in which the whole (holos) and the parts (meros) are not merely articulated components of a system, but reflections-participations in Totality. Noica’s concept seeks a unity of the world that transcends dichotomies—an organic unity, a fluid ontological reality, opposed to thinking that separates brutally: individual vs. totality, part vs. system, particular vs. universal. In this way, Noica aims to define relationships where the part is not mutilated, the whole is not oppressive, and each element carries the ‘signature’ of the whole.” (excerpt from the curatorial text) – Gilda Ghinoiu
