EPHEMERAL. Personal exhibition Vasile Cercel at Galateea Contemporary Art

The personal exhibition Ephemeral/Efemer, signed by the ceramist and sculptor Vasile Cercel, recently opened at Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery in Bucharest. Prof. Dr. Ion Bogdan Lefter and the artist Cristina Popescu Russu spoke at the opening of the exhibition, curated by George Dragomir Turia.

“After more than 20 years since his last personal exhibition in Romania, the ceramist and sculptor Vasile Cercel returns to Galateea Contemporary Art with the exhibition-event Ephemer, which is a crowning of his lifelong research on the relationship between material and immaterial, between energy and aesthetic form. While his approach is deeply intellectual, Vasile Cercel’s works are anti-rhetorical and anti-discursive: far from trying to fix meanings, the artist puts porcelain, stone, wood and metal into a series of productive dialogues about the nature of form and possibility, about temporality and spatiality—essentially, about the creative force of energy that is life and its elusiveness.”
George Dragomir Turia

Vasile Cercel was born in Bacău. He graduated from the Bucharest National University of Arts, Faculty of Decorative Arts and Design, Ceramics-Glass-Metal Department, specializing in ceramics. He exhibited individually and in groups in Romania and abroad and has works in numerous public and private collections. He was vice-president of the Union of Visual Artists from Romania and president of the Decorative Arts Section. In 1988, the UAP awarded him the Prize for Decorative Arts, and in 2004, the Presidency of Romania honored him with the Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Commander for his work in the field of Fine Arts.
