“chairs_” | Duo show Claudia Retegan and Răzvan Neagoe at 2/3 gallery

The artists Claudia Retegan and Răzvan Neagoe exhibit together at 2/3 galeria in the center of Bucharest.

The idea for the duo exhibition took shape after a visit to the studio, where they discovered this common theme of reclining chairs.

All the photos in the exhibition have the chair as their subject. Răzvan Neagoe portrays objects found in abandoned or temporarily unused spaces during the Covid pandemic, adopting an impressionist aesthetic. Repetition is used often in the images of these chairs which often appear in sequences or images that are sectioned and then recomposed.

Claudia Retegan’s creations include collages, photography, and video, using both archival images and her photographs. She began the series entitled “some chairs” in 2015 in Los Angeles, which was exhibited for the first time during her residency at the California Institute of the Arts in the spring of 2015.

“The chair is the piece of furniture that reflects the most variations of style throughout the ages, the chair is also a political piece of furniture, from the beginning of its history being in close connection with the symbols of power, which can be traced to the present day.” Claudia Retegan, founder of 2/3 gallery.

Răzvan Neagoe adds: “The project unfolds a series of states, delimited by an enumeration of photographic compositions. Photographs must be understood beyond the reality of immediate viewing. The interiors are photographed only in the night light, which penetrates through the curtains, blinds, or under the door, often invading privacy and thus revealing the often painterly atmosphere of the photograph.
Thus, the “chairs_” exhibition is not just the image of a simple room populated with furniture pieces, but describes an internal x-ray of a state of mind”.
