ARTICULATING BOUNDARIES | Paul Ilfoveanu & David Pelmus

Diptych Art Space presents the duo-show Articulating Boundaries, artists Paul Ilfoveanu & David Pelmus, curated by Irina Motroc.
The exhibition represents the first project selected following the open call made by Diptych Art Space and the National University of Arts. It aims to offer exhibition space to emerging artists and curators still in their study period. The open call, which encourages collaborations between the theory and practice departments under the UNArte umbrella, was opened between May and July 2023, and the projects were selected by Mirela Dăuceanu (UNArte representative), Lina Țarmure (curator and co-founder Diptych) and Zoltán Belá (co-founder of Diptych).

“The exhibition Articulating Boundaries proposes a foray into the complexity of human intimacy by revealing and dissecting the boundaries built and demolished in our relationship with the inner and outer worlds. The exhibition concept is centered on the segmentation and reassembly of personal experiences and challenges viewers to become voyeurs and explore worlds through the transparent window of the exhibited works. The installations presented encourage an honest look, dissecting emotions and cultivating conflicting feelings. The outside view of privacy brings to the fore the influence of society and external observers on personal space.

Articulating Boundaries is an invitation to contemplation and an exploration of how we construct boundaries in search of self, turns the viewer into an active participant in the fragmentation and reconstruction of emotions, and offers the opportunity for self-discovery and recovery in the face of unreserved exposure.” Irina Motroc, excerpt from the curatorial text.

Paul Ilfoveanu (b. 2003) lives and works in Bucharest. He is currently studying at the Bucharest National University of Arts, Department of Photography and Dynamic Image. He shapes his artistic discourse through photography, installation and video art, producing both concept-supported and stand-alone images. His creation pursues a discourse on modesty and the image of the absurd, an approach that aspires to free the individual from the modesty of the situation, which acts as a barrier to possible freedom. His works have been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions, such as: “Freies Kino: Transitions / Transformations: Frames from the Attic”, Künstlerhaus Vienna (2023); “Eclectic 1.0”, “Eclectic 2.0” Craiova Art Museum (2023); “See You Don’t Fall”, Pogo Gallery (2023); “Eucalypt”, Eforie Cinematheque (2023).

David Pelmus (b. 2003) is a multi-media artist who lives and works in Bucharest. He is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree at the “National University of Arts Bucharest” in the Department of Photography and Dynamic Image. His favorite practices are photography, video, stop-frame, sound and music. Starting from sculptural works, he uses, most of the time, object and installation to present his photographic works. It oscillates around antinomian elements such as illusion and allusion, detail and collage, presence and absence, attraction and repulsion, the place of memory and the void of oblivion. His works and the projects he participated in were presented in national and international exhibitions: “Freies Kino: Transitions / Transformations: Frames from the Attic”, Künstlerhaus Vienna (2023), “Eucalypt”, Cinemateca Eforie (2023), etc.

Irina Motroc is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Bucharest. She graduated from the Bachelor’s (2021) and Master’s (2023) courses at the National University of Arts Bucharest, Department of Graphics. Simultaneously with her artistic practice, Irina developed an interest in cultural and educational projects that facilitate access to culture and favor, on the one hand, collaboration between artistic communities, and on the other, between artists and society. During her years of study, she participated in various actions to support and promote students in the contemporary art environment. As an extension of these interests, in 2023, she curated the exhibition “Revealing the Tangible”, which took place in the exhibition space of Tipografia Hub in Craiova.

The exhibition can be visited until February 22, 2024, based on a schedule communicated later on the Facebook page of Diptych Art Space.
