OPEN CALL – Intimate Choreographies

The project “Intimate Choreographies. Mapping a new reality” (dance/performance) aims to bring to the public attention the need to rethink artistic practices in the choreographic field in the current social and political context, proximity to the general public and support for the new generation of choreographic artists and performers, at the national level. Thus, by organizing a series of 3 consecutive days of interactive durational artistic interventions in the public space in Bucharest, Brasov and Sibiu, the project launches a message of solidarity and call for peace, integrates the local artistic community, and invites the public to interact through new media technologies.

The project concept starts from the idea that our surveillance/tracking can generate a deep emotional intimacy, which once transposed within the installation, undermines the technology’s detached and uneven power structure.
By using the public surveillance camera system (CCTV – closed-circuit television) the experience of interaction between the public and the performers will be captured and documented. The artistic intervention of the 5 selected artists will consist of audio guidance in the public space of a group of a maximum of 20 people simultaneously, through an individual audio system (headphones and receiver).

The participants will be audio guided by a choreographic and dramaturgical construction, which will include indications regarding the interaction with those around them, and common choreographic actions, while integrating moments of individual reflection experienced simultaneously, through fragments from the poems of the artist Anton Ovchinnikov (translated into Romanian and English), who chose to stay in his hometown of Kyiv during the war in Ukraine.

How the project will develop:
Between September 22nd and October 2nd, the 5 selected artists will have 4h/day to prepare for the intervention, at the WASP (Working Art Space and Production) headquarters, on Ion Minulescu Street 67-93, Bucharest.
The interaction event with the public will take place in the public space, Timpuri Noi Park, the intersection of Nerva Traian and Splaiul Unirii, between October 3rd and 5th of October and 10th – 12th of October, between 3-5 hours/day.
The 5 artists selected following the OPEN CALL will be joined as special guests by dancers from Ukraine, who are currently in Bucharest.
