Open Call: Art Movements Foundation Award for Contemporary Drawing

Art Movements Foundation has opened the call for participation in the first edition of the Art Movements Foundation Prize for contemporary drawing, a project that aims to recognize and reward a representative work for the artistic actuality and sensibility of the current world.

The initiators of the artistic competition, which will take place annually, launch the challenge to participate in the call for Romanian and foreign artists at any stage of their artistic career, who live, work, or study in Romania, including Romanians from the diaspora, for which drawing is an important component of their artistic practice.

An independent jury of personalities from the Romanian cultural-artistic scene will designate 50-70 finalist works and this edition winners. The first edition will be judged by Petru Lucaci – artist, teacher, curator, President of UAP from Romania; Ion Grigorescu – landmark artist of the last five decades and symbol of experimentalism in contemporary art; Raluca Ilaria Demetrescu – visual artist and curator, Aurelia Mocanu – critic of art and journalist, Alexandru Rus – art collector and Radu Pandele – visual artist.

The first prize, for 2,500 euros, will be offered to the author of the most representative drawing, which will come closest to the value and quality requirements imposed by the jury; 1,500 euros will go to the work ranked the second, and 500 euros to the third work. Candidates for the Art Movements Foundation Award for contemporary drawing will also compete for the Collector’s Award, offered this year by Alexandru Rus.

Applications are accepted exclusively online until September 15, 2023. Eligible application files will contain quality photos of no more than three works of art of maximum 100×100 cm, made on paper, cardboard, textile – in pencil, charcoal, dry pastel, wax or fat, ink, watercolor, sanguine, charcoal, pressed charcoal, graphite, felt, markers, blur, gouache or mixed media, black and white or color. Digital techniques, painting, objects, installation, and sculpture are not accepted.

Through the Art Movements Foundation Award for contemporary drawing, the young cultural foundation aims to provide further visibility to drawing, an artistic discipline still in the shadow of the queen of the arts – painting – and thus contribute to the dynamism of an art market that encourages the purchase of contemporary design in Romania as well.

The favorable repositioning of contemporary drawing on the international artistic scene since the 2000s has led to an increase of up to five times in the share of artists who constantly practice this discipline in the global art market. Private galleries and museums from the USA, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain contributed and continue to contribute to the revival of drawing – through projects, exhibitions, and annual fairs exclusively dedicated to promoting drawing.

Art Movements Foundation will connect collectors and the general public with the most representative works of drawing through the exhibition AMF – Contemporary Drawing, which will take place in the fall of this year.
