Galeria Romană, in collaboration with Galeria DADA, brings the exhibition “Victor Brauner – Works on Paper” to Bucharest. The opening will take place on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 7:00 PM, with introductory remarks by Erwin Kessler, Director of the National Museum of Art of Romania.

Following its successful run at the Piatra Neamț Art Museum (June 14 – July 19, 2026), the works on paper created by Victor Brauner can now be admired in the capital as well.

Curated by Cătălin Davidescu and Cristinel Popa, the exhibition brings together drawings, engravings, lithographs, posters, invitations, magazines featuring illustrations by Victor Brauner, and books illuminated by him—works that reveal the intimacy of the artist’s creative process and the power of his symbols. This is the Brauner less known to the general public: the artist of the sketch, the fleeting thought, and the talisman on paper. Here, the Bucharest audience has the opportunity to discover Brauner beyond the large-scale museum canvases. On paper, the artist is direct and unfiltered. His engravings, as well as his ink and pencil drawings, serve as his secret laboratory. It is here that the Cyclopean eye, the prophetic bird, and the totems are born—works that are fragile in material yet powerful in vision.

The exhibition speaks to two essential aspects of Brauner’s art: his personal mythology and his Romanian roots. Even in Paris, he remained connected to archaic signs, folklore, and mystery. Paper thus becomes the meeting point where Surrealist Europe encounters the local spirit of the Romanian avant-garde. The exhibition tour will continue in Buzău towards the end of the year, offering the local public the opportunity to experience the work of one of the most important Romanian artists of the 20th century.
