Traces of Light, the solo show of Irina Dumitrașcu Măgurean from 2/3 galeria, brings together “several research directions of the artist, all of which share a common understanding of photography as both a tangible and intuitive medium. We are accustomed to photography presenting reality to us, or at least its manipulation. In any case, we expect to recognize forms, faces, spaces, etc., in the photographs we see.
Photography itself has become an extremely common and accessible gesture. But since photography is actually a medium reactive to light, it means that it can be used like a pencil, to create from scratch without considering the direct depiction captured through the camera’s apparatus. This is exactly what we encounter in Irina’s works: a study of light materialized in the form of almost sculptural photographs.” (excerpt from the text of the exhibition)
Irina Dumitrașcu Măgurean lives and works in Cluj-Napoca. She studied at the University of Art and Design Cluj, where she obtained a Doctorate in Visual Arts (2013). She is a lecturer at the same university, teaching in the Photo-Video department. Irina has conducted research internships at MOME in Budapest and the Academy of Art and Architecture in Prague.
Her artistic activity focuses on exploring the photographic medium, transcending the two-dimensional boundary of photography, and extending the photographic medium beyond mere recording of reality. In addition to her artistic and teaching activities, Irina coordinates the activity of the artist-run exhibition space “Camera,” dedicated to emerging photography from Romania, and has launched the photography magazine Grupaj, a platform for promoting photographic art in the country.
