Crossroads | Group exhibition initiated by Viewing Room 17

Between October 18 and 29, 2023, the Crossroads exhibition took place at the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum. The event brought together 11 artists of Romanian, Moldovan, Hungarian and Bulgarian origin who belong to an emerging and dynamic generation.
Each of them had the opportunity to benefit from a creative residency in the art space Viewing Room 17 – a project managed by the artist Gáspár Szilárd.

Viewing Room 17 promotes young art from Cluj nationally and internationally, but also aims to facilitate communication between the local artistic environment and the international scene, especially the Hungarian artistic world.

Fragility, a melancholic tinge, an appetite for allusive semantics and ephemerality are the elements of thematic content or atmosphere found in the art of all the young artists supported by Viewing Room 17, present in the Crossroads exhibition. A diverse understanding of beauty -almost never sought directly or ostentatiously, but embedded in the exhibited works as a naturally prominent feature- is also fascinating to detect upon close examination of the works present in the exhibition hosted by the Cluj Art Museum. Deceptive and savoury inaccuracies, apparent indecisions that are actually the result of remarkable technical skills, and metaphorical depths that refuse to reveal themselves easily challenge the viewer, in an exhibition that brings together diverse mediums of artistic production, from painting to sculpture and installation, to ceramic engraving.
