Irina Motroc’s exhibition – The Words Project – is the third project selected following the open call made by Diptych Art Space and the National University of Arts from Bucharest, which aims to offer an exhibition space to budding artists and curators, who are still during the study period. The open call, which encourages collaboration between the theory and practice sections under the UNArte umbrella, was opened between May and July 2023, and the projects were selected by Mirela Dăuceanu (UNArte representative), Lina Țarmure (curator and co-founder Diptych) and Zoltán Belá (co-founder of Diptych).
“The Words Project proposes an analysis of words’ creative power corroborated with water’s vital energy. Drawing analogies between water’s properties and words’ nature, Irina Motroc’s works highlight the fluid, dualistic and transformative essence of human communication. Starting from the intrinsic qualities of both elements, the project examines how words can be transparent or opaque depending on their use and the context in which they are spoken, much like water in different lighting conditions.
As water can connect, separate, clarify and darken, words have similar capabilities. The Words Project invites participants to reflect on the energy and emotion embedded in words and recognise these energetic symbols’ impact on their relationships. Through this process of exploration, we gain a deeper understanding of the complexity and duality of communication, ultimately appreciating the creative force that words, like water, bring to our lives. Words can drown, heal or freeze; we can float through their multiple meanings or sink under the pressure they can exert on us.” Anne-Marie Lolea, excerpt from the curatorial text
The exhibition can be visited until September 12, 2024. Admission is free.
Irina Motroc is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Bucharest. She graduated with a Bachelor (2021) and a Master (2023) from the National University of Arts Bucharest, Department of Graphics courses.
In her practice, Irina investigates the idea of memory that is redefined with time. She is interested in themes where the self-referential is used as a resource to draw connections to collective memory, archetypes and the relationship that is created between the conscious and the unconscious. The artist works with various media such as graphics, photography, object, video, and installation. It uses seriality and multiple types of multiplication, copying, and transfer to highlight the repetitive nature of events and their change or transformation over time, a visual juxtaposition of multiple perspectives or states.
Anne-Marie Lolea (b. 2002) is a graduate of the Faculty of Art History and Theory of the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Her areas of interest include early 20th-century modernity, curatorial practices, and the dynamics of the contemporary cultural scene.
