The exhibition “[ Fear — as a concept ] urges an inner dialogue with our phobias, having as points of materialization the works that, like fear, are transposed through different environments with specific themes.
The exhibition concept starts from the theme “fear – self-portrait” launched within UNArte and is based on German Expressionism, especially the cinematic one. Films such as “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” or “Metropolis” are the inspiration from which artists develop the representational formula.
/ Cristina Bîrlădeanu shares her fear of being judged, hence the visual expression “all eyes on me” in the work.
/ Ștefan Cheșu starts from the fear experienced, more or less, by each child – the darkness. He recounts how, when he was little, he used as a “defense mechanism” a flashlight and a fort made of blankets.
/ Razvan Șumila chooses to look at the work of Robert Louis Stevenson. The figure of the artist emerges into two complementary halves, like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: silence-violence.
/ Alexandru Bosoi analyzes how the mind can create from a mundane element a real nightmare. The desire to move away from the void can therefore be fueled by fear.
/ Bianca Voicu produced three dynamic games with angular lights starting from Ion Grigorescu’s work “Washing with light” made in 1979 and from the structural-scenographic elements of the expressionist films.
/ Nuria Gioroceanu composes a self-portrait with a long exposure, forming a unitary image of six dynamic sequences. In carrying out the work, she starts from the fear of decomposing the self.”
The opening takes place today, May 19, between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM at Știrbei 47 Gallery Ştirbei Vodă Street, no. 47, Bucharest). The exhibition can be visited until Sunday, May 22.
