SPOTLIGHT 2022 Festival of Video-Mapping, Sound, and Lights #MADE IN RO

SPOTLIGHT, one of the most expected outdoor visual art festivals in Bucharest, takes place this weekend (October 14th – 16th, 2022) on Calea Victoriei, between the National Military Circle and the Romanian Athenaeum.

For three days, between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., the Spotlight Festival will animate emblematic places on Calea Victoriei with 3D characters, interactive installations, video mapping screenings, and VR works.

The theme of the sixth edition is #Made in RO. If the first five editions have presented to the public a mix of works made by local and international creators, SPOTLIGHT 2022 presents only new media productions designed by Romanian artists, works exhibited in international festivals in the field. Romanian artists were invited to reimagine the city through new media, a niche field of visual arts.

Every evening of the festival, the National Military Circle, the Odeon Theatre, and the Novotel Hotel come to life through video-mapping performances, sound, and lights. From the series of interactive installations, the Spotlight audience is invited to compose music from air pollutant particles in the “Particle Composer” installation in front of the Novotel Hotel. And in front of the National Museum of Art of Romania, eight 3D animated creatures come to life in the VR installation “Folklore Creatures – BestiAR”. The center of the Spotlight fun is right in front of the Muzica store, where the party atmosphere given by the Discoball installation is maintained by the good music broadcast live by Radio Europa FM.

Revolution Square hosts two large light-art installations, “Human Head” created by the Romanian start-up Humans.ai and Kaustik’s Kaleidoscope. And on the sidewalk of the National Museum of Art of Romania, the installation “Lumi.Nativ” invites passers-by to go through a tunnel of light traveled by successive pulsations.

Present for the first time at the Spotlight Festival, Monument for integrates two emblematic statues from Bucharest and the Arc de Triomphe in the program of this year’s edition. On the route on Calea Victoriei, the statue of Mihai Eminescu from the Romanian Athenaeum and the equestrian statue of Carol I in front of the Central University Library are animated by video-mapping projections within the “Living Statues” program, a campaign that aims to value emblematic monuments of the city through a series of artistic reactivations.

The Arc de Triomphe, the second Spotlight location this year, will be activated on October 16 through a special event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the monument’s inauguration. The centenary of the Arc de Triomphe is thus marked within the Spotlight de Monument for by a video-mapping show on the façade of the building. The public is invited to discover the interior of the monument through a thematic exhibition related to the history of the time and performance.

Project organized by the Bucharest City Hall, through Cul Tur Ed – Department of Culture, Education, Tourism of Bucharest, together with ARCUB – The Cultural Center of Bucharest.
