“SHOW ME A BETTER WAY”, Joachim Perez’s first solo show in Bucharest

The exhibition SHOW ME A BETTER WAY, an event that takes place at Cazul 101 will be accessible to visitors until September 3. The exhibition includes some of the latest works of Joachim Perez, made in different mediums, such as embroidery or linocut. The artist also prepared an installation for Cazul 101, which is included in the exhibition circuit.

Joachim Perez approaches social and historical topics in his works, interpreting them through the lens of his own experience. He explores situations that have to do with identity, memory, and desire. His works thus become sensitive and poetic transpositions of scenarios in which even everyday objects acquire a nostalgic air. In addition to the themes that deserve to be carefully followed, Joachim Perez gives his creations a special look from a visual point of view, the viewers being invited “to get lost” in the many layers of material and wool with which he works when making his embroidery.

Another aspect detailed by the artist is the male body, which Perez approaches critically and inserting elements of subjectivity. The images created are narrative, dynamic, having an erotic undertone. In works such as Rice stories (2022) or Journal no.4 (2021), Joachim Perez renders through the male body aspects of his trauma and intimacy, introducing himself in the creative medium.

Although the exhibition SHOW ME A BETTER WAY are included works made in several environments, the embroidery is certainly the element that attracts the most quickly the attention of the viewer. They are exhibited in a manner in which the exhibition space is divided into two distinct halves: one oneiric, in which the subject appears to be suspended, and another claustrophobic, in which the subject is surrounded by two walls. Also, the works are placed at the level of the eye, since, as Perez states, a visual exchange is carried out in this way between the viewer and the subject of the work.

Joachim Perez is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York City. He is an emerging artist, whose works have been included in exhibitions held in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The exhibition organized at Cazul101, an unconventional space whose context seeks “to encourage and, at the same time, to inconvenience the work of art”, represents the first solo show of the artist in Romania and the fifth internationally show. Having a sensitive creation in which his inner conflicts are subtly introduced, along with eroticism and desire, Perez is an artist whose exhibition is certainly worth visiting due to the special narrative of his works.
