“SAVE THE PRINCESS!” | Performative installation at the French Institute in Bucharest

Save the princess!, the performative installation signed by Alexandra Sand, Mesden Method and Andrei Dinescu, guest artist, is presented for the first time at RDW Design GO! by the French company Mesden Valley, together with the French Institute of Romania in Bucharest, as institutional partner.

Save the princess! is an in situ performative action, in which a contemporary “princess”, an ambiguous “hero” (played by Andrei Dinescu) and an invisible player evolve in a game with fluid rules and reversible roles. Spectators are invited not only to observe, but also to interact, becoming part of a playful universe, full of symbols and perspective reversals.

Under the motto SAVE THE PRINCESS!, the project encourages the rediscovery of play as a form of meaning and expression. The experience has a voyeuristic background: visitors enter the intimate space of the artists, open cabinets, discover objects and witness a performance that seems to take place in the conscious absence of the protagonists.

Alexandra Sand is a visual artist who lives and works between Bucharest and Paris. Her practice, focused on video, performance art, installation and drawing, investigates identity, perception and female corporeality. She was a fellow at Villa Medici (2015–2016) and a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome (2018). She is a PhD candidate in philosophy at the University of Bucharest and is represented by the Hervé Bize gallery in Nancy, France.

Method Mesden was born in the 20th century in a gaming room. The son of a maid at a Parisian train station discovered his vocation for the “theater of the depths” during a visit to the salt mine in Turda. For several years, he has invited his audience to a cave in the Italian Alps, where he creates performances between religious ritual and burlesque comedy. His collaboration with Alexandra Sand began during a seminar on the hermeneutics of crystals.

Andrei Dinescu is a violinist, composer and performer. Trained by masters such as Ion Voicu, he explored various styles – from jazz and rock to electronic and traditional music – and collaborated with artists such as Rodion G.A. or Taraf de Haidouks. He founded bands such as Zebre, IMPEX or Steaua de Mare and is one of the important voices of the “Proto Manele” movement. Through the Shamanelism project, he created the largest digital archive of Romani music and composes music for theater and film.
