RISIPIT | A visual essay on waste

Artep Gallery invites the public to discover another perspective of waste, authentically captured by the photographs, video-art interventions, scans and post-photographic works in the WASTED/RISIPIT art installation made by Andrei Gavriliță, a graduate of the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design from the “George Enescu” University of Art from Iași. Inspired by the ecological theme of paper waste in the digital age, Andrei Gavriliță approaches waste on an emotional, social, cultural level, in an era of excessive consumerism, on a symbolic, human level, not just on an object level.

“In the multimedia installation WASTED/RISIPIT, Andrei Gavrilița explored how his artistic interpretation brings new meanings to advertising materials. His works are critical comments on the consumer society, the compulsive behavior of individuals, the interventions harmful to the environment, artistically expressed from the perspective of an objective observer. Thus, the format that the artist proposes through different specific techniques and through the digital processing of commercial materials, by filming the performative gesture of destroying them and by inviting the public to repeat the same gesture, forms a new discourse that questions waste”, explains the curator Cristiana Ursache.

“In my art I do not seek to address too specific social issues. I look at the world in a democratic way – chaotic but harmonious, as it can be found, unfiltered, raw. In my photographs, problems coexist with the beautiful and the ugly and are beyond any categorization. I am not trying to directly criticize or express my strong views on the issues that affect us. When it comes to my photographic practice, I am a trained observer with a critical sense, but with artistic and expressive intent,” says the artist Andrei Gavrilița about the themes that concern him in his artistic explorations.

The exhibition can be visited at the Artep Gallery in Iași until January 20, 2024.

Andrei Gavrilița (b. 2001, Republic of Moldova) is a visual artist, specialized in photography. His artistic practice is characterized by projects that explore the photographic medium from a conceptual point of view, but also by documentary and direct photography series. Andrei uses the photographic medium as a tool in his artistic explorations, trying to understand the world and himself. His conceptual projects present an experimental and didactic perspective that questions and pushes the limits of photography, while direct photography works are an anchor in the physical world, explorations of intimacy, expressions of the artist’s sensitivity and his relationship with the context in which he finds himself.
