Opening | “People of Slag”. Personal exhibition by Dumitru Gorzo at Pittner School in Reșița

The Pittner School Cultural Center in Reșița hosts the exhibition “People of Slag”, signed by the artist Dumitru Gorzo and curated by Maria Bîrsan. The official opening will take place on July 31, 2025, at 4:30 p.m.

The event is part of a new stage of the SOME ARTISTS AND A “CLOSED” MUSEUM project, run by the Banat Mountain Museum (MBM) in Reșița. It is integrated into the Continuous Studio VII program – an open workshop format held for two and a half weeks, both within the Pittner School and in a former industrial hall.

If the first exhibition within this project, “Three Works I Know In the World”, presented a selection of works on paper from various periods and techniques, “People of Slag” brings together new works, created during the residency. These borrow from the monumental expression of the city’s industrial buildings and blast furnaces, reflecting a material memory in which pigment mixes with slag – the palpable remnant of Reșita’s industrial past. The exhibitions are not strictly delimited; the works from the two moments coexist in the same space, meet, overlap, and communicate.

Without realizing when and how, Reșita has become a kind of home. Sometimes the city finds me in all sorts of places; other times, I provoke it. We do one, two or nine activations these days, and I will come back. I promise.” — Dumitru Gorzo

This new episode of the collaboration between the artist and the city is part of the project “Some artists and a ‘closed’ museum. When art engages a bored public”, coordinated by the Banatul Montan Museum, in partnership with Pittner School, and co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration (AFCN). The project is integrated into a series of artistic interventions aimed at bringing contemporary art closer to the local community, including in marginal or forgotten areas of the city. It is a resilience project of the Banatul Montan Museum (MBM) in Reșița, undergoing rehabilitation during 2025, which decided to face the temporary challenges of its closure in a creative formula of urban exploration through contemporary art.
