About Atelierele Malmaison:
Originally a military barracks, the Malmaison Building has significant historical importance and is 180 years old, during which time a Military Officers School, a military court, a prison during the Antonescu regime and a centre of investigation and detention of the Security during the beginning of the communist regime.
Atelierele Malmaison aims to integrate the building into the city’s living circuit, inaugurating a new stage in its long history. The workshops occupy approximately 3000 sq m of the Malmaison building, and the workspaces are fully occupied on a long-term basis.

Through the efforts of the artistic community and with the support of the main sponsor, UniCredit Bank, together with the sponsors Brico Depot, Policolor, Ursa, and The Plot, in 2021, the 1st floor was renovated, and then the 2nd floor, which is now occupied by 35 artists’ workshops, alongside nine project spaces coordinated by artistic groups, non-profit associations, or art galleries.

The Atelierele Malmaison project took shape organically and independently through the self-organization of a multidisciplinary group active in different environments on the contemporary art scene in Bucharest. Although the need for initiatives of this type is not at all new, rarely in the history of the Bucharest art scene has such an extensive group succeeded in this type of coagulation.

The space aims to shape a stable and sustainable cultural context in the long term through solidarity, encouraging collaborations between artists, artists and other cultural agents on a national and international level and supporting new generations who need a stable support structure.

The community formed around the Atelierele Malmaison believes that art and artists must have a safe and visible place in society, and their creation requires long-term support through affordable exhibitions and workspaces. The individual workshops are open to the general public for visits twice a year; otherwise, they are dedicated to work. The public is invited to consult their schedule to visit the galleries and other exhibition spaces.

Sponsors renovation and rehabilitation 2020 – 2022: UniCredit Bank, Brico Depot, URSA, Policolor, THE PLOT
