Between July 11 and 13, 2024, the Original Copy Association organized the event Fiasco. Video art evenings at Grădina cu Filme – Cinema & More in Piața Lahovari, during which 23 video artworks from around the world were broadcast, preceded by two thematic lectures.
The curatorial selection was signed by the artist Larisa Crunțeanu and the curator Cristina Stoenescu.
In the first two evenings, on July 11 and 12, the projection evenings started with a thematic lecture by curators Edith Lázár and Anja Lückenkemper, continuing with video art projections made by: Daniel Frota de Abreu, Anetta Mona Chișa, Fredj Moussa, Marco Verhoogt, Mara Verhoogt and Ioana Mincu, Alice dos Reis, András Cséfalvay, OJOBOCA & Andrew Kim, Marie Lukáčová, Ann Oren, Thea Lazăr, Mary Reid Kelley & Patrick Kelley, Jakub Štourač & Anna Luňáková, Helen Anna Flanagan, Naomi Rincón- Gallardo, Lori Lako, Dragoș Alexandrescu, Olivia Mihalțianu, Christian Jankowski, Irina Botea Bucan, Zhanna Kadyrova, Guerreiro do Divino Amor, Agnieszka Polska.
The title of the event was inspired by Stanisław Lem’s sci-fi novel, in which an encounter with another form of extraterrestrial life is a missed opportunity for communication with catastrophic conclusions.
The selection of films meant an associative conversation with some of the hypotheses outlined by Lem, proposing works that nuance, suggest and sometimes ironize the pessimistic narrative of the opening reading.
Three themes emerged from the reading of Lem’s novel, which guided the selection of films during the video art evenings: Marginile Privirii (July 11), Self as Archive (July 12), and Times in the Swarm (July 13).
*The films were played and subtitled in English, and access was free without requiring prior reservation. The lectures were held in English.
