ETAJ artist-run space from Bucharest attends, between April 25-28, 2024, with the support of ICR Stockholm, the Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair, an international art fair that brings, in Sweden, more than 50 artists and galleries from over 20 countries, to the center of attention.
As part of Supermarket 2024, ETAJ presents “Lady Lucy: The Embodiment of the Feminine”, a small group show with four female artists born in Romania: Ilina Schileru, Antonia Corduneanu, Călina Coman, Diana Butucariu and Ruxandra Tudoran. Conceived around a fictional character, the exhibition consists of a dream setting, presenting medium-sized pieces in various mediums, inviting the privilege to open up in a gentle visual discourse about women, artistic practices and personal mythologies.
“Lady Lucy” is the guardian of space, a fictional celestial character created from thoughts and questions. It floats on a reservoir of imaginary resources, embodying the harmonious spirit and precious sensibility inherent in works of art. Through Durand’s writings, we delve into the interplay between night dreams and daydreaming.”
ETAJ artist-run space, which includes the exhibiting artists Ilina Schileru, Antonia Corduneanu, Ruxandra Tudoran, Călina Coman, and Diana Butucariu, was invited for the third time to this international art fair.
Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair is an international art fair that emphasizes meetings, presentations, exhibitions and performances, the exhibitors being predominantly art centers and galleries run by artists. Started in 2006, the art fair is a dynamic space that emphasizes the promotion of independent artistic initiatives and the promotion of young artists. The theme of this year’s edition of the alternative art fair is “Dream On”, inspired by the short prose of the German author E.T.A. Hoffmann.
ETAJ is an artist-run space initiated in 2018, which operates in Bucharest as a catalyst aiming at the efficiency of contemporary artistic objects in the local context. Several artists have grouped together in the idea of forming a cultural platform. ETAJ’s main objectives are focused on increasing the visibility of emerging artists in search of alternative solutions for the launch and public display of their creation. The aesthetic directions that ETAJ proposes are eclectic, spontaneous and, often, experimental. However, there are also specific ordering elements, such as the in situ nature of the works exhibited and designed by the promoted artists.
In 2021, the artistic group ETAJ represented Romania at the first edition of the Juxtapose Art Fair in Aarhus, Denmark. ETAJ’s recent participations in similar art fairs were at the Hybrid Art Fair in Madrid (2022) and the (Un)fair in Milano (2023). In 2023, they participated in a group exhibition entitled “iMigrate. The Biology of Transition” at the Durden and Ray Gallery in Los Angeles.
