“Diversity of Sensitivity and Expression” exploring the art of ceramics at Galateea Gallery

Until October 12, 2022, the exhibition “Diversity of Sensibility and Expression”, curated by Vlad Basarab and Marius Stanciu, is taking place at Galateea Contemporary. Through its concept, the two curators set out to explore the art of ceramics, one of the most rooted and revered traditions of the Far East, through the works of seven Japanese artists: Aya Murata, Yuri Takemura, Mikiko Tomita, Sayaka Shingu, Sayaka Oishi, Mayumi Nakamura, and Seito Tamura. The group of artists is considered to be representative of the current Japanese cultural scene when we talk about the phenomenon of contemporary ceramics, and through the collaboration with the Tosei Kyoto Gallery, Galateea was able to give them visibility in the artistic scene of Bucharest, as well.

Following the sensibility of the local aesthetics, the artists integrate various techniques and materials in their works, showing a full mastery of the art of ceramics, thanks to the results reminiscent of organic figures, such as the cellular bodies of Mikiko Tomita, natural, through the floral semi-porcelains created by Aya Murata, but also essential elements of Japanese culture and ceremony, such as Yuri Takemura’s ‘Kanchubai’, ‘Yugyo’, ‘Neiro’ tea bowls. Diversity of Sensitivity and Expression “includes works, which compose a poetic and metaphoric discourse through the most refined matter”, as is pointed out by the curators of the event.

By exploring the structure, volumetry and the vibrant chromatic elements, the visual effects obtained by the Japanese artists capture the evolution of the artisanal “pottery” in the East Asian region, its object becoming delicate and aesthetically pleasing. However, when working on the creations, the artists do not depart from the regional custom, the new wave of Japanese ceramics being a continuation of the pottery tradition, in which the personal perspective of each ceramist is also incorporated into the art piece.

The exhibition of the group of Japanese artists is an unique opportunity to explore the art of ceramics in all its finesse, especially since the works are made by local creators, with thorough training based on the traditions born in the exact same cultural region. Nowadays, ceramics are increasingly appreciated in the Western Hemisphere, even more so than in Japan, the exhibition organized by Galateea Galery being among the few in Romania that stage creations of contemporary artists from East Asia.

“Diversity of Sensitivity and Expression” can be visited until October 12, from Monday to Friday, between 16:00/20:00 or 12:00/16:00, depending on the schedule, on Calea Victoriei no. 132.
