“Around the body, the earth sews carefully” – an exploration of the body, material, and meaning

Sector 1 Gallery in Bucharest presents, until November 6, 2025, the exhibition “Around the body, the earth sews carefully,” a compelling artistic dialogue between Guadalupe Vilar and Gyárfás Oláh, curated by Norbert Filep. Organized in collaboration with MyGallery (Madrid), the exhibition brings together two distinct yet complementary perspectives that reimagine textile material as both plastic medium and symbolic language.

The exhibition begins with a reflection on how, since ancient times, the construction of the world has been conceived according to the proportions of the human body. Clothing emerges not only as a protective shell but also as a cultural expression. In today’s context of overproduction and utilitarian obsession, the two artists propose a reinterpretation of textile as a vehicle for speculation, imagination, and cultural rethinking — beyond its practical function.

Guadalupe Vilar, an Argentinian artist based in London, works with discarded and sustainable materials to create sculptural pieces that go beyond fashion. In her ongoing series Desvestida (Undressed), garments become autonomous entities that tell fictional stories about future societies trying to reverse ecological collapse. Her practice bridges fashion design, ecological activism, and spatial installation.

Gyárfás Oláh, a visual artist from Miercurea-Ciuc, Romania, draws inspiration from mythology, folk traditions, and the sculptural potential of natural and found materials. Through textiles, hay, wood, and stone, he creates hybrid forms that evoke archaic spirits or protective beings. His works are acts of material and spiritual recycling, blending craft with myth and memory.

Together, the two artists present an exhibition that dissolves boundaries between art and design, object and body, matter and land. Their works transform the gallery space into a living organism — not merely a place of display, but one that is dressed, activated, and reimagined.
