Accelerator: Performances in public spaces

Eastwards Prospectus Cultural Association (ACEP) announced the launch of the Art in Public Spaces part of the Accelerator program.

Between September and November 2024, the five artists from the program, Albert Kaan, Roxana Morar, Dumitrița Răzlog, Ioana Rusu, and Mihai Savin, will launch artworks in public spaces in several cities of Romania.

The artist Roxana Morar will launch the first work on September 22, 2024. The event will take place in Baia Mare, following the coordinates 47°41’30.6″N 23°47’41.4″E (hill area, around a mountain trail), starting at 14:00.

“My works explore a variety of subjects related to matter, interaction, movement and images. I am particularly interested in the conscious actions that shape and underline the multiple possibilities of an event. When it comes to objects, I’m fascinated by the relationships we can form with them and how these interactions can influence our context.” – the artist Roxana Morar tells us

The works of art in public spaces follow the research of several communities in Romania. The research brings to the surface themes from everyday life or socio-cultural phenomena as they are felt in our society. All this is reinterpreted through the artists’ practice, and the public is invited to connect with the artworks and find their own meanings under the stimulus and within the framework staged by the artists.

“We believe art in public spaces is a valuable way for the general public to experience contemporary art. The fact that I was able to work together with Roxana for this project in Baia Mare, a place she is closely related to, is crucial. This personal connection adds a meaningful element that adds a layer to the public and online documentation of the event.” – mentions Georgia Țidorescu, curator of the Accelerator works series.

Prior to the stage launch, the 5 artists in the program supported a mentoring internship consisting of workshops and 1-to-1 mentoring. The workshops developed themes such as art in public space, communication in the context of artistic practice, and the relationship between artist and curator.

“Ever since 2021, when we started the first Accelerator program, we have integrated a new strategic direction into the vision of the Eastwards Prospectus Cultural Association. Specifically, we have identified an opportunity to support emerging artists by providing them with knowledge, resources and exposure contexts, contributing, in an entrepreneurial way, to accelerate the development of their careers. In particular, art in the public space is, in Romania, still unexplored to its true potential. In a context where contemporary art, with all the efforts and existing projects, is not yet very popular, artworks installed in public spaces are a way to bring art to the place where people spend their time and invite them, thus, in the world of art.” – says Andrei Breahnă, president of Eastwards Prospectus Cultural Association and Accelerator project manager

Accelerator Program. Mentoring and Art in Public Space lasts 8 months, from April to November 2024.
