Cătălin BĂLESCU: “Proiecții Manieriste/Mannierist Projections
Curator: Calin Dan
Assistant Curator: Nicoleta Coman

Cătălin Bălescu, Proiecții manieriste

The exhibition ” Proiecții Manieriste” reflects the relationship developed over time by the artist Cătălin Bălescu with Mannerism, an important artistic current in the history of art. In the Cătălin Bălescu ‘s vision, postmodernism is a new form of manifestation of Mannerism. Initially, Mannerism was interpreted as a fracture with the ideals of harmony promoted in the Renaissance. Today, however, Mannerism is presented as a continuation of the searches and achievements of representative artists of the Renaissance. The exhibition can be visited at the third floor.

Cătălin Bălescu (b.1962) is a visual artist, UAP member, and professor at the National University of Arts Bucharest, painting department where, since 2012, he holds the position of rector. Born in 1964 in Galați, Elena Scutaru studied sculpture at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, where she is currently a teacher (lecturer univ. dr.). She has participated in numerous artistic residencies and group exhibitions both in the country and abroad. In the Auditorium Hall, located on the 4th floor of the museum, the artist Maria Mandea welcomes visitors with a game installation inspired by a quote from the book Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Mankind, written by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau:

«The first man, who after enclosing a piece of ground, took it into his head to say this is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, how many wars, how many murders, how many misfortunes and horrors, would that man have saved the human species, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows, “Beware of listening to this impostor; you are lost, if you forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.” »

(Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Mankind, Part Two)

Maria Mandea (b. 1991) is an artist and designer. In 2017 she graduated from the Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism, Product design Department, and is currently researching playful design at the Doctoral School at UNArte Bucharest.
