The ghost map of the swamp around which the whole life of the community in Luncavița commune (Tulcea) revolved, made by young artists and anthropologists from Bucharest, returns home. The central research project of the Art and Anthropology residency, the map of the stories of the locals of Luncavița, returned to the local community at the “Simion Leonescu” Technological High School. The map was presented last year at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest.
“Here was once a water” was the first exhibition of the “Art and Anthropology” project. This took place in Bucharest and last year presented the results of a four-week interdisciplinary residency in the commune of Luncavița in Dobrogea. The Art and Anthropology Residence, the first project of its kind carried out in the northern Dobrogea area, brought together, last summer, artists and anthropologists in a complex interdisciplinary research approach to the former floodplains of the Danube located in this space.
The residency project continues this year, and the streets of Luncavița once again witnessed the descent of young artists and researchers from Bucharest this summer.
At the beginning of this fall, the project team installed the MAP in the halls of the “Simion Leonescu” Technological High School in Luncavița. It recovers local histories and is educational material for all ages. With the support of the high school management, this important resource, which documents the life and surroundings of the northern part of Dobrogea, was brought back to the space where the stories of the former Danube flood zone were collected. The Art and Anthropology Residency is an interdisciplinary project to familiarize artists and anthropologists with the northern Dobrogea area. The former flood zone of the Danube, currently agricultural land, and the space around the town of Luncavița served as the first research and exploration ground and as a space for dialogue with the local people. Last year, within the project, co-financed by AFCN in session II/2023, the residency brought together 12 artists and anthropologists. The results of their research were exhibited in the exhibition “Here Once Was Water”, which took place at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in September of the same year.
Art and Anthropology is an initiative of @laborator_artistic.
The Art and Anthropology Residency project is co-financed by AFCN and realized with the support of SNSPA, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and Luncavița City Hall.
