“Collective Wall – Liminal Marks”. About borders as territorial and individual boundaries.

The “Collective Wall – Liminal Marks” exhibition will open at the National Art Museum of Moldova, which will present the works of 12 artists and artistic collectives from Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine: Valeria Barbas, Mălina Ionescu & Andreea Medar, Iosif Kiraly, Rita Lira, Denise Lobonț, Bogdan Mateiaș, Mălina Moncea, Maia Ștefana Oprea, Ghenadie Popescu, Marilena Preda Sânc, Vasile Rață, Valeriu Șchiau.

The exhibition, curated by Andreea Căpitănescu and Denisa Rad (assistant curator), presents a multidisciplinary analysis of borders—physical and symbolic—and how they are perceived as territorial and individual limits.

“In the context of the Revolution of 1989, the ideals of freedom opened the way to a period of profound change, marking on a personal level the end of self-censorship, division and marginalization imposed by the communist regime. Freedom, however, very soon meant exodus and restructuring at the level of society, and the concept of border, frontiers and territorial and symbolic limitations was perceived differently at the individual level.

“Collective Wall – Liminal Marks” approaches the theme of borders from various perspectives – geographical, cultural, intergenerational, gender and ethnic, exploring the multiple meanings of this concept in the current context.

It emphasizes the meaning of boundaries and intersections in nature and society. In ecology, an ecotone represents a transition zone between two ecosystems, characterized by diversity, tension, and adaptability. Interference zones between distinct communities are typically characterized by high diversity, tension, adaptive capacity, and resilience. Interstitial spaces cannot be defined without understanding the boundaries they create and maintain. The exhibition aims to highlight how, in both nature and society, spaces of interpenetration and boundaries are not just dividing lines but fertile zones of innovation, change and growth. In this context, the proposed works become powerful metaphors for connectivity and coexistence, highlighting the need for an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to understanding the complexity of the systems in which we live.” (excerpt from the press release)

The opening of the exhibition will be marked by a discussion led by art critic Vladimir Bulat and artist Vasile Rață. The discussion will offer an in-depth perspective on the exhibited works and the themes addressed.

The exhibition is part of the Cultural Connectors project – a collective initiative that represents the artistic and cultural collaborations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The aim of the project is to enrich bilateral collaboration strategies with artists and institutions from the Republic of Moldova through cultural and educational exchanges.

Cultural project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
