Art Safari announces the opening of a new event in the country dedicated to one of the most important Romanian painters, Nicolae Grigorescu (1838-1907). The exhibition can be seen between May 14 and June 16, 2024. The art lovers have the opportunity to admire rare works by the most beloved Romanian painter.
The “Nicolae Grigorescu. Anniversary Exhibition” opens on May 14, 2024, at Arad Art Museum, a public cultural institution subordinate to the Arad County Council. The exhibition marks Nicolae Grigorescu National Day, celebrated annually on May 15.
Considered a national symbol and a pioneer of Romanian modern painting, Nicolae Grigorescu is honored through this exhibition, which brings lesser-known masterpieces, mostly from private collections, to the fore. Among the exhibited reference works are “Țărăncuțe (De la fântână/ Peasants (From the Fountain),” “Dimineața, după ploaie/Morning after the Rain,” “Cap de țigancă/Gypsy Head,” “Întoarcerea spre casă/Homecoming,” “Țărăncuță cu furcă/Peasant with Fork,” “Costum verde de bal/Green Ball Gown,” etc., each reflecting Grigorescu’s genius and sensitivity.
One of the most beautiful works by Nicolae Grigorescu from a private collection
“Tărăncuțe (De la fântână), the central piece of the exhibition, is an essential work that is part of a cycle of variations on the same theme of “Return from the source”, a theme addressed by Grigorescu throughout his creation. This work, a market record, is an absolute masterpiece of the artist.
Grigorescu was a complete and complex artist, with a vast creation, with impact at the European level. His works transcend national borders, contributing to the affirmation of Romanian art on the international scene. The exhibition will be an opportunity to discover lesser-known aspects of Grigorescu’s creation, such as his studies of nudes in the landscape, inspired by the tradition of the Barbizon School, or the works created by the artist during his time in Rome, which are of particular importance in his artistic evolution.
Ox carts, scales, faces of girls, shepherds, and sheep are the Romanian emblems that Grigorescu transposed in his paintings. Art Safari presents this impressive artistic heritage through works from private collections, the Brukenthal National Museum and the Constanta Art Museum.
