Galeria Romană is pleased to invite you on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, starting at 19:00, to the opening of the exhibition of the artist Angela HANC.
Angela Hanc was born in 1979 in Galati and currently works in Arad. She graduated in 2002 from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Painting Department, within the University of Arts and Design in Cluj-Napoca. Over time, she created numerous iconographic works of art and participated in personal and group painting exhibitions in the country and abroad. Her work is concerned with highlighting distinct stylistic alternatives in the contemporary artistic landscape, which seek to spiritualize the concrete space through quasi-traditional technical means.
“Adam, where are you? represents a continuation of the exhibition project The Garden of Efrem. Pictorial transcriptions after the Hymns of Heaven by Saint Ephrem the Syrian, organized at the Art Museum in Arad in 2015. (…). Then, I proposed to present an unconventional iconographic program using a selection of key images ordered narratively based on the supporting text of the Hymns of Heaven [1].
This time, the concept of the layout of the works is played out in a plausible scenario. Paradise begins with a garden, like that of Dion, a site nestled at the foot of Mount Olympus strewn with ruins, bushes, and the remains of statues. This sacred place, for me – a border garden- allowed me to update the typology of the open air. (…)
In addition to the studies we have carried out in the Dion site (2015 – 2017), the present project and a series of water paintings on canvas inspired by the same place: Olive Tree, The Hidden Crab, Dionysus Valley, Landscape with Ruins and Columns, Night Garden, Landscape with Mount Olympus, Ancient statue of Dion, etc.
Another fascicle of works with the same technique is the “marine gardens”. Studied closely in the old town at the foot of Mount Olympus, they float crisscrossing on an expanse of water, chromatically saturated like a feast. Thus, they resonate with the nostalgia of the old craft, namely transparent or layered painting.
Another technique present in the exhibition is tempera with emulsion on wood. As a dialogue between the iconic image and the one in the profane space, I have also included an icon painted on a walnut panel. It is the icon of Saint Ephrem the Syrian. The step-by-step process of making the icon is a constant source of inspiration for the exhibited works.” (Angela Hank)
The exhibition is open from April 2-30, 2024.
Gallery schedule: Monday-Friday: 10:00-18:00, Saturday: 10:00-15:00.
