On Thursday, March 7, the “Spectres of Synesthesia” exhibition officially opened. The duo show of Valeriu Paladi and Rinaldo Novali, curated by Ioana Mirică and Roxana Diochețanu, enjoyed the presence of many artists and critics from the Romanian art school, as Horea Paștina, Cristian Dițoiu and Mihai Potcoava.
“In a reality occupied by noise, the essentialization of language, of any kind, offers a respite of the self in relation to the world surrounding it. From angular frames to abstract compositions, the exhibition “Synesthesia Specters” communicates order and harmony as landmarks of understanding, elements that are paradoxically placed in the multitude of sensations generated affectively. Subject to a synesthetic language, artistic impulses are present in the realm of minimalism and geometric abstraction. In this sense, the exhibition of the two artists foregrounds the timeless charm of geometric simplicity, inviting the public to immerse themselves in a world of pure form by exploring the essence of artistic expression, where each line or pattern outlines a complex framework.” (excerpt from the curatorial text)
Valeriu Paladi (b. 1968) is a complex artist who completed his artistic training in three fine arts universities in Chisinau, Bucharest and Bologna. While studying in Italy, the artist had a revelation: “I discovered a close connection between painting and other arts, such as music and poetry.” His inspiration comes from his predilection for plein-air painting. Borrowing forms from nature, the artist (re)composes, in a minimal plan, the reconciliation of the individual with the universe. Palladi’s Apollinium becomes a primary element in guiding the viewer towards an infinite space of silence that reigns over the harmony between relationships.
In recent years, his work has begun to abstract, focusing on the limits imposed by vertical and horizontal configurations. Using these simple forms, the painter wants to express his inner complexity in relation to his artistic practice.
Rinaldo Novali (b. 1952) finalized his creative activity within the Academy of Arts, painting section, Bologna, later, being the teacher of the artist Valeriu Paladi, whom he perceived, from the very beginning, as a colleague, and not as a simple student, constantly encouraging him in his career. Rinaldo Novali was Head of the Painting Department of the Academy of Arts, Bologna, having numerous personal exhibitions in his native country, Italy, and abroad, in France, Greece, Norway and Holland.
He also participated in various exhibitions, such as the International Biennale – Ankara, Turkey (2005) and the International Painting Biennale, Chisinau, Moldova (2011). Although he follows artistic experiments, nothing is accidental in his works. His distortions and variations are thoughtful, the artist harnessing the emotions he feels when bringing the works to life.
The “Synesthesia Specters” exhibition can be visited until March 31, from Monday to Friday, at the Elite Art Gallery (Piața Naționile Unite, no. 3-5), between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
