Friday, October 20, from 5:30 p.m., at FabLab (Str. Morilor no. 56, Iași) the debate “Tactical media today: reimagining the climate crisis, between nuclear danger and incessant violence” will take place, together with Raluca Oancea (curator ), Horea Avram (art historian), Alexandru Bălășescu (anthropologist) and Cristian Neagoe (environmental activist), moderated by art critic Cristian Nae.
“I imagined this panel when the impact of the war in Ukraine was still extremely fresh and highlighted the identity needs of a nation under attack, and the actual debate takes place in the vibrations of a new war, this time with deeply religious connotations, this time situated in the Middle East. How is this smolder of conflagrations seen from the perspective of visual art and to what extent does this climate directly affect us – through mass media, propaganda, the Internet – in the conditions of the global climate crisis?
The panel brings together the vision of artists, anthropologists, environmental activists, curators and new media critics to debate, mainly, the issue of the visibility of the forms of violence through which the planetary ecosystem suffers. Subsidiarily, the limitations of the critical discourse mobilized by the contemporary visual arts in the conditions of its instrumentalization by the institutionalized system of the art world are targeted, as well as potential solutions that the critically engaged contemporary art can still propose in relation to these pressing ecological issues”, details Cristian Nah.
The exhibition “Under Constriction” by the artist Radu Carnariu, curated by Cristian Nae, can be visited at the Artep Gallery until November 12, 2023. The artists invited with temporary interventions are: Alexandra Ghioc (10-17.10), Mihai Zgondoiu (17-25.10), Raluca Ilaria Demetrescu (26.10-1.11) and Mircea Modreanu (2-8.11).
The debate, attended by experts from various complementary fields, takes place at FabLab Iași and is developed within the UNDER CONSTRICTION project, initiated by the Artep Gallery Association and co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration (AFCN).
